April 2011 marked a first for Myriad Global Media and industry-publication Offshore. The documentary film First Oil Ghana’s Jubilee produced for Tullow Oil by Myriad Global Media was cover mounted on Offshore’s OTC preview issue, the first time Offshore had had a cover mounted feature in it’s 56-year history. Over 40,000 copies were printed and distributed to oil and gas professionals worldwide.

	History

April 2011 marked a first for Myriad Global Media and industry-publication Offshore. The documentary film First Oil Ghana’s Jubilee produced for Tullow Oil by Myriad Global Media was cover mounted on Offshore’s OTC preview issue, the first time Offshore had had a cover mounted feature in it’s 56-year history. Over 40,000 copies were printed and distributed to oil and gas professionals worldwide.

	Production

Myriad shot live action largely using Sony’s XDCAM Professional Disc, a rugged disc format similar to a blu-ray, that provided a perfect combination of availability, price and robustness for use in the field. Using its network of global crews, Myriad captured developments in Ghana, Houston, Dallas, Louisiana, London and Singapore in offices, industrial yards and offshore.

	Post

Myriad made extensive use of Adobe After Effects to create animation that explained the technology implemented on Tullow’s Kwame Nkrumah MV21 FPSO. 2D animation allowed Myriad to succinctly explain the complex turret system that allows the FPSO to rotate freely in the volatile weather conditions it faces in the Gulf of Guinea. With a company and industry wide target audience it was important that complex engineering concepts were explained in a way that could be understood whether viewed by an engineer of 25-years experience or a fresh-faced graduate.

	Reception

The film was well received by the energy industry and film professionals alike with the film winning the Special Jury Award, the highest award for creative excellence, at the WorldFest International Film Awards 2011.

Myriad Global Media has hired Dina El-Korety to be the regional Operations Manager based out of the newly established Abu Dhabi office. Dina will be supporting regional MD Jennifer Palmer in the day-to-day running of the Middle East business.

Time-lapse photography is not a new technique, having first appeared in a feature film in French film pioneer George Méliès’ Carrefour De L’Opera in 1897, however Myriad Global Media’s latest time-lapse required a state-of-the-art set up to cope with challenging conditions in Pori, Western Finland.

Anadarko have been slowly loading out the 23,000-ton Lucius truss spar towards the vessel waiting to transport it to the Gulf of Mexico for a month, and Myriad Global Media have been capturing every inch of the action. Myriad have been capturing a frame every five minutes using a single camera housed in a special heating unit that ensures the camera continues to function in Pori where temperatures have reached as low as -15 degrees Celsius. Should there be a bout of frenetic activity, Myriad can speed up the rate of capture remotely to capture a frame every second, or if activity is delayed the rate of capture can be slowed to once every 24 hours.

With a month of time-lapse complete the Myriad Global Media team are preparing for another year of filming on the Lucius project as we capture the project right up until first oil, expect in 2014. Following completion of the project we will be producing a project documentary covering the full life of the project and an animated film covering key aspects of the project.

Myriad undertook its first time-lapse project way back in 1991 for Chevron on the Alba project, running over a 2-year period.

Now close to landing approval on scripts and interface design (work in progress above subject to change), Myriad is gearing up for a shooting period at Dubai Airports in early June. The footage captured on this venture will be edited into films that will form part of 4 interactive learning modules that provide a basic induction of the facilities at which Dubai Airports' employees will work.

When filming is complete Myriad’s graphic design and post production teams will be grounded for a number of weeks as they work towards a delivery date in early July. Providing a safety induction tool for the 2nd busiest airport in the world is an exciting project for the team and Myriad will be working hard to keep Dubai Airports' 35,000 employees safe with a tool that takes health and safety communications to new heights.

2012 marks the 50th Anniversary of The Club, Abu Dhabi’s most established private Member’s Club. This anniversary celebrates a milestone that makes The Club, founded in 1962, actually older than the United Arab Emirates itself.

The Club was originally founded by a group of pioneering expatriates on land that was kindly donated by His Highness Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan, former Ruler of Abu Dhabi. However given that the precise date of The Club’s founding in 1962 cannot be recalled exactly, a full year long celebration in 2012 was deemed appropriate. All of The Club’s members were invited to share in this historic celebration and Myriad Global Media were given the opportunity to document it.

Through the anniversary year our Myriad documentary team captured the essence of what makes The Club unique and the key events of the celebratory year.

Myriad is now fast approaching the delivery of the exciting Whale Sharks documentary that began filming in June this year in the Qatari waters of the Arabian gulf.

Leading the team of underwater cameramen was Emmy award winning Director of Photography, Michael Pitts. All the footage was captured on the Red Epic and, as such, has captured the majestic nature of these mysterious ocean wanderers.

This documentary follows the story of the Research trip undertaken by the Maersk Oil Research and Technology Centre (MO-RTC) in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment’s Whale Shark Research Project.

The footage, accompanied by engaging interviews and delicately produced graphics, will marry together to create a dynamic, informative and exciting film.
