The people who build it are too close to it to explain it, and the people who need to back it, buy it or approve it do not share the vocabulary. The gap between the two is where good technology stalls.

It is a translation problem with high stakes. A breakthrough the inventor finds obvious can be opaque to the investor funding it, the customer specifying it and the regulator approving it. Each of them decides the technology’s future, and each needs it explained without being patronized.

The trick is to lose none of the substance. Strip out too much and the experts stop trusting you. Keep it too technical and everyone else switches off. The work lives in the narrow band where a non-expert finally gets it and an expert still respects it.
