The brief
Process safety is what stands between a normal shift and a catastrophe.
IOGP’s Report 638 distils the Process Safety Fundamentals: the practices that prevent the low-frequency, high-consequence failures this industry can never afford. The fundamentals deserved a film, not another document: something that makes every viewer understand why they exist.
The opportunity
Start where the fundamentals started, with someone who was there.
The film opens on the night of 6 July 1988, and it was made with Steve Rae, a survivor of Piper Alpha. The fundamentals are not abstractions; they were learned at the highest possible cost, and hearing that from a man who lived it gives a short film an authority no script alone could. Told with restraint, the history makes one point: process safety makes a difference in real lives, because its absence once did.
The work

A voiced film of two to three minutes with a minimalist score, made in partnership with ADNOC and IOGP: an educational film about standard-setting, focused on the process safety materials IOGP shares with its membership and why they exist. Built to be shown to crews, contractors and leadership alike, anywhere in the industry the fundamentals apply.
The impact
Best practice, given its reason.
Released on IOGP’s public website, the film gives the industry a way to open the process safety conversation that no slide pack can: the fundamentals presented not as compliance but as the industry’s promise to its own people, made by those who know what breaking it costs.
