The brief.
In a county that lives alongside a major plant, even the children need to know one procedure cold.
Shelter in place is what protects people in the event of a gas or chemical leak from the local ExxonMobil facility, and it only works if it’s known before it’s needed. The Chambers County LEPC commissioned a short animation for schools and other educational settings: something that could teach the procedure to children clearly, without frightening them.
The opportunity.
Lighthearted in tone, deadly serious in content.
That balance is the whole assignment. Panic erases nuance, so the animation strips shelter in place to its essential steps, shown in plain language at a calm pace, in a style friendly enough for a classroom. The lightness is not a compromise; it’s the delivery mechanism. Children remember what didn’t scare them, and a procedure remembered is the entire point.
The work.
An animation, a teacher’s pack, and every language the classroom needs.
The short 2D animation communicates the real risks and the real steps, supported by a pack of education materials built for teachers to use around it, so a screening becomes a lesson. The package was versioned into Spanish, and the 2024 update made it fully inclusive of Chambers County, so every child watching sees their own county in it.
The impact.
Rolled out to every school in the county, then borrowed by the neighbors.
The animation was very well received and now plays in all schools across Chambers County, and on the strength of that it was reversioned for adjoining counties to use. Public safety material earns its keep by spreading; when neighboring counties ask for your school film, it’s working.
